Obituary for David M. Rantz

David M. Rantz, 82 years of age, of Lynn, formerly of Winthrop and Revere, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2017.

Cherished son of the late Morris and Marjorie (Rehal) Rantz and Anne (Staretz) Rantz. Beloved husband of the late Marie (Blundo) Rantz. Cherished father of Laura Rantz Moyer and Nadine Rantz Casey and their mother Margaret Casey, Lisa Giambartolomei Luise and her fiancé Michael Hayes, Diana Giambartolomei Santheson and her husband Carl, Maria Giambartolomei Calla and her loving companion Paulie Christie and the late Audrey Buchanan. Adored grandfather of 10 and great-grandfather of 8. Caring brother of Lois Vasel who was his best friend, Joan Estabrooks, Florence Hodgkins, Selma Pomeranz, and the late Harvey Fischler, Marjorie Ferrara, and Freddie Rantz. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

David was born in Salem, MA and moved to Winthrop at age 11. He joined the family business at age 14 at the Chicago Model Bakery started by his grandfather, Sam, and then run by his father. David worked alongside his grandfather, parents, uncles, Auntie Annie, brother Freddie, and his dear cousin Gary Cooper. The bakery closed just before the Chelsea fire of 1973 and he then went to work at other bakeries, including with his good friend, Ritchie Katz at Katz Bagel Bakery in Chelsea and then with his Uncle Joey and cousin Gary at the Brick Oven in Peabody. David was a Master Baker, retiring in 1990 after 40 years in the Baker’s Union.

He loved animals and his long walks. He was an avid sports fan and a betting man. The kids still talk about his weekly card games at the kitchen table back in Chelsea with neighbors and friends. He looked forward to his yearly family trips to Las Vegas and had wonderful stories and memories of seeing the real stars, such as, Elvis, Frank Sinatra and countless other big acts. He loved Revere Beach and, back in the day, had many fun times with his friends at Bill Ash’s. Late member of Revere Lodge of Elks, #1171.

David was a generous, good man always willing to help his children and grandchildren. At the same time, he instilled in all of the children a wonderful work ethic and the value of a dollar.

David will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

A Memorial Service will be held in David’s honor on Saturday, December 30th at 11AM in the Chapel at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, MA. Inurnment will follow the service.
