Obituary for Ronald Catena

Ronald A. Catena of Ft. Lauderdale Florida, formerly of East Boston and Revere, passed away on August 3, 2017, at Holy Cross Hospital, Florida, after a short battle with cancer. Ron was the son of the late Rose and Frank Catena, and brother of the late Michael Catena.

Ron spent most of his working life in Boston, directing public and political affairs for the Boston Water and Sewer Commission, and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. He was also very involved in Boston politics. Ron loved to travel, touring Europe and beyond with his dear friends Marcia MacClary and Dick and Diane Pabich. He moved to Ft. Lauderdale 12 years ago. Once Ron decided to set down “new roots” in South Florida, he was anxious for things to do, places to go, and, of course, people to meet. He was already a member of the Boston Prime Timers group. And so he joined the Ft. Lauderdale affiliate. He became active in his Condominium Association, making friends with most of the friendly, gracious folks who lived there, throwing lavish dinner parties, and joining its Board for a while. Ron was always the jokester at a party. You could always be sure everyone would be laughing. But he was also socially aware and politically active, so he sought out other avenues: the Dolphin Democrats (through which he made many lasting political allies) and, dearest to his heart, SAGE of South Florida (an independent affiliate of SAGE USA) advocating for LGBT rights in general, and Senior rights in particular. He served as Board Vice President four years, and was elected Board President in March, 2017. Ron is survived by his aunt Irene Moscariello, several nieces, nephews and cousins, especially his close cousin, Melanie Curley and her family, and many close friends. He will always be remembered for his wit and his love of life.

A mass will be celebrated on August 16th at 10 am at St. Anthony’s Church in Revere followed by burial in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, MA.Family and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
